How a Solatube works

1+2An acrylic dome (or polycarbonate option) sits on the roof gathering light from all around, directing it down the tube, thanks to the built-in Fresnel lens, (Fresnel developed the light house lens, which takes a small point of light and spreads it out over miles of ocean. By reversing this technology the Solatube gathers light from all around and focuses it down the tube).

3Inside, the tube is lined with the world’s most reflective material (99.7% reflective), which ensures that the maximum amount of light is reflected down to the room below.

Systems which use only 98% reflective material struggle to deliver all the light to the room below.

4A range of diffusers can be fitted to the end of the Solatube where it emerges flush to the ceiling, ensuring the light is diffused and spread evenly throughout the room.

Consequently, a Solatube is able to;

a. gather more light
and
b. deliver more light down the tube
…than other systems.

No wires, no batteries and no CO2 – just bright, electric-free lighting.

Choice of Polycarbonate or Acrylic Roof Dome

Solatube acrylic domes

Are supplied as standard for all domestic applications unless otherwise specified. Sometimes referred to as PMMA, acrylic is stronger than glass (though not as tough as polycarbonate) and guaranteed against discolouration. It is the only option offered by most other manufacturers.

Solatube polycarbonate domes

Are BBA certified and can be installed without restriction as to their roof position on all UK public, commercial (and residential buildings). This dome is extremely robust – stronger than acrylic and many times stronger than glass – and it is BBA Certified. With all polycarbonate materials, some slight discolouration may occur over time, however this will have little effect on the amount of daylight delivered by the system. Solatube polycarbonate domes are supplied for all commercial applications, unless otherwise specified.
